A man in North Carolina found a $20 bill and bought a $1 million lottery ticket with it.

Jerry Hicks from Banner Elk found the $20 bill on the ground outside of a gas station last Tuesday. He bought an Extreme Cash scratch-off card at the Speedway on NC 105.

He told them that he had planned to buy a different lottery ticket, but they took a chance and won. “I found $20 in the parking lot outside the Speedway,” he said.

“I bought the ticket with that.” It turned out they didn’t have the ticket I wanted, so I bought that one instead.

After he gets his prize, Jerry has big plans for a special meal to celebrate.

He said, “We’re going to Golden Corral right away and eat everything they have.”

Jerry could have taken the win as a lump sum of $600,000 or as a $50,000 payment every year for 20 years. The $600,000 lump sum was his choice. After federal and state taxes were taken out, took home $429,007.

After 56 years as a carpenter, he wants to retire with the money he won. He also wants to give his kids some money.
