What is Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) for SSDI recipients?

Just so you know, “SGA” stands for a certain amount of earnings that the Social Security Administration uses to decide if a person can get disability payments.

Keep in mind that a worker must not be able to do any Substantial Gainful Activity in order to get disability payments. In other words, the worker who makes more than the SGA limits cannot get disability payments.

Do not forget that citizens who are blind get a bigger SGA amount than people who are not blind. These numbers change every time the index of the national average wage goes up.

It’s important to note that Substantial Gainful Activity for the Blind only works for Social Security benefits and not for SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits. Social Security and SSI payments do allow people who are disabled but not blind to do substantial gainful activity.
