A woman from North Carolina is being charged with “burning of churches” after she is said to have set fire to a bush outside of a church late Tuesday night.

The event happened at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A witness said she saw the woman start the fire and then run away. Carrietta Spence was named as the suspect, and she was caught by police soon after the crime.

Around 11:25 p.m., the fire was reported, and Elizabeth City cops arrived quickly. Spence was taken without any further trouble when police found her a few blocks away from the church.

Spence is being charged with damage to property and setting churches and other religious places on fire. Authorities have not yet released any information about a possible reason for the act, and it is still not clear if Spence had any ties to the church before.

Spence was taken to the Albemarle District Jail and held on a $10,000 bond after she was arrested. She is due to go to court for the first time on Thursday to face the charges.
