In this news update, the U.S. Government has said something important about the state of some bills. From now on, some bills will not be recognized.
Five, twenty, fifty, and one hundred dollar bills will still be valid, according to the Federal Reserve (Fed). That being said, new styles are coming out in a few months, which could mean some changes.
Which dollar bills will be rejected?
Many stores, including well-known chains like Walmart, Target, and Dollar Tree, will stop taking broken bills starting in October 2024. Among these are:
- Banknotes referred to as “mutilated” by banks, which have tears or missing corners.
- Bills that appear faded or distorted, often due to being in wet clothing.
Not only will shops not accept these kinds of bills, but banks and ATMs will too. The dollar won’t go away, but why are these bills being turned down?
The Initiative Behind the Change
In order to make these changes, the US government worked together with the Bureau of Engraving, the Secret Service, and the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence (ACD) Steering Committee. The goal of this project is to make the financial system safer.
The Goal of the Initiative
As the government has already said, the goal of this effort is to improve the security of the currency system to stop counterfeiting and protect the value of the US dollar.
When Will New Bills Be Released?
- 2028: A brand-new design for the USD 50 bill.
- 2030: An updated version of the USD 20 bill.
- 2032-2035: Introduction of a new design for the USD 5 bill.
- 2034-2038: Redesign of the USD 100 bill.
As newer versions of bills come out, these changes could affect how earlier bills can be used in everyday situations.
The Current Bills in Circulation
The Federal Reserve currently prints seven different types of bills in the United States. These are the USD 1, USD 2, USD 5, USD 10, USD 20, USD 50, and USD 100 bills.
Even though bigger bills like the USD500, USD1,000, and USD10,000 aren’t being made anymore, they are still legal money and should be taken everywhere in the country.
How to Spot a Fake Dollar Bill
With the number of fake bills going up, it’s important to learn about the safety features of money.
Check Security Features:
- Security Thread: Hold the dollar bill up to the light to see a vertical thread with the inscription “USA”.
- 3D Security Ribbon: On larger bills, the bells on the blue ribbon shift to the number “100” when you tilt the bill.
- Color-Shifting Ink: On the USD100 bill, the numeral in the lower right corner changes from copper to green.
- Watermark: A faint image of the portrait appears when you view the bill against the light.
- Microprinting: Tiny inscriptions, like “USA”, are scattered around the bill.
- Raised Printing: The texture of the bill, especially on the portrait, should feel slightly rough to the touch.
These traits not only make it easier to spot fake dollar bills, but they also make people more likely to trust the money that is in circulation. Know what’s going on to keep your activities and money safe.
