News Schools in North Carolina are closed because of Helene

Some school districts in western North Carolina will be closed for kids and staff over the next few days because of Hurricane Helene.

Watauga County Schools said on Facebook that the school district will be closed all week. When services are back up and running, officials say more information will be sent out on other channels.

Alleghany County Schools will be closed from Monday to Tuesday, but teachers can choose to work on Tuesday if they want to.

In Wilkes County, the only day that schools would be closed was Monday. But officials say that district staff will check out the campuses and the neighborhood to see when it is safe for kids to return. Teachers don’t have to work that day, but they are told not to go if they don’t feel safe doing so.

Surry County Schools were also closed on Monday, but from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., three high schools will be open to provide safety to families who have lost power. There will be bathrooms and showers, and workers from Child Nutrition will be there to serve meals.

On Monday, Iredell-Statesville Schools leaders chose to have a remote learning day. There is also power back on in all school buildings in Yadkin County, so the district will be back to normal.
