Friday, Richmond County schools and the Boxcar Concert were canceled

The Richmond County Schools have said that there will be no school on Friday in Hamlet.

The district said the schools were closed because of “the potential for high winds and tornadoes” caused by Hurricane Helene.

The National Weather Service says that winds in Richmond County will be between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

From 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday, the area will be on flood watch, and from midnight to 6 p.m., it will be on wind warning.

All staff will be able to choose not to work on Friday.

Thursday night’s varsity football game between the Raiders and the Falcons at Pinecrest High School will still happen. Because of the weather, the game was moved up.

Hamlet has also canceled the Boxcar Concert Series show on Friday night that was supposed to feature the local band Vagabond.

The city of Hamlet’s director of community involvement, Mechelle Preslar, said that some food trucks have backed out, but TGIFridays on Main is still likely to happen.
