Authorities say a man in Wilmington reported that his ex-fiancee still had a nearly $60,000 engagement ring that had been stolen by Airbnb guests, even though he knew that his ex-fiancee still had it. He then stole his new girlfriend’s notary stamp to make fake paperwork to file the claim.
Auto-Owners Insurance paid David Barnes’ claim quickly after getting it in November, according to Mike Causey, the insurance commissioner for North Carolina.
However, it was later found that Barnes used his new girlfriend’s notary stamp and faked her signature on a sworn statement of loss form that the insurance company needed.
Because of this, Causey said that theft costs about 20 cents of every dollar we pay for insurance.
