ROCKINGHAM — The weather in Richmond County is being warned about several things as another tropical storm moves toward the coast.
A flood watch has been put out by the National Weather Service in Raleigh until 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The watch comes as the National Hurricane Center names a storm “Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight.” The storm is expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain to places west of Interstate 95 and east of the mountains.
In the southeast part of the state, it could rain 4 to 8 inches, and just west of Wilmington, it could rain up to 12 inches.
Most of North Carolina has a 15% chance of flash floods.
A wind warning is also in place until Tuesday at 2 a.m.
It’s likely that tropical storm-force winds of 39 mph or higher will hit most of Richmond County between 10 and 20 percent of the time. Winds will blow steadily at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph.
The storm was 95 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, at 11 a.m., moving 5 mph north-northwest and having winds of up to 50 mph.
It looks like the storm’s center will go through an area just south of Bennettsville, South Carolina, around 8 a.m. Tuesday and hit the Charlotte area by 8 p.m.
The long-range prediction says there is a chance of rain and storms every other day this week until Friday. The weather will clear up for the weekend.
