There will be layoffs at J&J Snack Foods’ Holly Ridge plant on November 9 because of a fire on August 19. The company has officially told the state of North Carolina about the layoffs.
The exact number of workers who would be affected wasn’t given, but the fact that 33 job classifications were listed shows that the effect would be wide.
The plant makes pepperoni sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, and Pretzel Dogs. Super Pretzels, Luigi’s Real Italian Ice, and Dippin’ Dots are some of the best-known snacks made by J&J Snack Foods.
Both the inside and outside of the building were badly damaged by the fire, and people in the area said they could smell something strange for days afterward.
The Holly Ridge facility has been a big workplace in Onslow County since it was bought by J&J Snack Foods in 2011 from Holly Ridge Bakery. Over 140 people worked at the plant at its busiest, making it one of the biggest private workers in the area.
Authorities in the area have not yet said what caused the fire or how much the damage cost. J&J Snack Foods is still figuring out how the fire will affect how the plant works in the future.
