Political analysts and North Carolina voters weigh in before high-stakes debate

There are only a few hours left until the very important debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday at 9 pm between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. It will be shown live on ABC11.

According to political experts, the debate will be VP Harris’s best chance to date to convince voters who haven’t decided yet to vote for her. On the other hand, President Trump will keep trying to win over key voters in swing states that could decide the election.

Steven Greene, a political science professor at NC State, said, “I think a lot of people are interested and excited to see what comes up between her and Donald Trump during this debate.”

Greene said that he thinks the Trump campaign will be ready to take a calm stance during the debate. He also said that Harris will have to calm the fears of people who haven’t chosen yet.

“To really try and allay the fears of the American public that she is too liberal, that she’s responsible for high prices in the economy and things they don’t like,” said Greene.

Before the debate on Tuesday, ABC11 talked to voters on Sunday. Many of them said they already knew what they wanted to do, no matter what happened on stage.

“I have already made up my mind.” Cat Tragesser of Raleigh said, “I like that the United States of America is a smart country.”

That was also said by another person.

“I think debates can be a lot of fun sometimes.” They might not change my mind. “But it’s kind of like watching sports,” said Jon Seelbinder, who lives in Raleigh.

Greene said that generally, debates don’t change people’s minds about voting. But after what happened after the fight between Trump and Biden in June, he said, “Anything is possible.”

“Am I really hoping for a game-changer this time?” “No,” he replied. “But I do think because of the very unique circumstances we are seeing with this debate that there is much more potential for it to make lasting changes in the dynamics of this campaign.”

ABC News reports that before Tuesday, former President Trump is meeting informally with a group of advisors that includes GOP lawmakers to talk about policy. At the same time, VP Harris is having fake debates complete with a stage and lighting for the debates.
