More than $115 million in unclaimed money returned to rightful owners, NC State Treasurer says

North Carolina broke the record for returning leftover money for the fourth year in a row.

The North Carolina Department of State Treasurer says that the Unclaimed Property Division (UPD) returned more than $115 million to the people who were supposed to get it.

UPD Deputy Treasurer Allen Martin said, “Our hardworking team of professionals made it possible for us to have another record year in terms of receipts and claims paid.”

For many reasons, money that can’t be delivered is kept safe at the department until its true owners can claim it. There is more than a billion dollars ready to be claimed right now.

UPD has paid out $610.5 million on 885,691 claims since 2017.

There are millions of dollars in North Carolina’s unclaimed property fund that have yet to be claimed. You might be owed money and not know it.

The department said that the unclaimed property includes old bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy money, stocks, bonds, and the items of safe deposit boxes that people have forgotten about.

Speaker Folwell said, “We can’t give this money away fast enough.” “Look up your name for free at NCCash.com. Find the names of your parents, your children, and your birth name. Your church, business, Little League, civic group, or other groups you join to may have money that needs to be returned.
