One of the rarest coins in the USA which is worth over $252,000

One amazing thing about coins and the hobby of numismatics is that a 25-cent piece can be worth a lot of money. This is true of the 1821 25-cent (Proof).

This type of coin is from a set called Capped Bust Quarters 1820–1838. John Reich made it, and it was mostly silver (89.2%) and copper (10.8%). When you look at it, though, unless you know a lot about silver, you might not think it does.

Where was this Proof 1821 Quarter Dollars minted?

PCGS says that Philadelphia is where this Quarter Dollar was made. Plus, only 15 were made. When only 15 coins are made, they are very rare and can be worth a lot of money.

Keep in mind that several thousand or even millions of the same species can be found. About four or five copies of this quarter dollar have been found so far. The National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution has a beautiful one of them.

It is known as the “D. Brent Pogue PCGS PR67,” and it sold for $235,000 in 2015. There is a third-quarter dollar that fans may know about. It was sold as a one-sided Proof in the Nor web sale. The fourth quarter dollar was sold by Eugene Gardner as an NGC PR65.

What was the sale record for this quarter-dollar coin at an auction?

It sold for $252,000 in 2023, which was the most ever paid at auction. Some people say that there are about 12 Proof 1821 Quarters, but that doesn’t seem likely.

That makes this coin even more interesting because fans and people who are interested in coins may like it more. Another great thing about this quarter dollar is that it has a picture of Liberty with a headband on the front.

There are seven stars on the left side of this quarter dollar and six stars on the right. The thirteen stars stand for the thirteen original countries. It’s at the very bottom and says 1821.

On the back, there is a heraldic eagle with wings spread out and an olive branch and arrows in its claws. There is a paper with the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above the eagle’s head.
