In the past few months, there was some talk about how the process for applying for disability payments might change. Now, the Social Security Administration has finally made it official.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) forms will be easier and faster to fill out after this change. At the moment, the application is filled out on paper with the help of an SSA worker, and the whole process takes about two hours.
The SSA says that by expanding the iClaim online portal, which lets people apply for more disability benefits, SSI applicants will be able to send their applications online without the help of an SSA employee.
Changes to the disability benefits program are finally official
The iClaim expansion will save applicants time by using easy, user-tested questions, pre-filled answers when possible, smooth, step-by-step transitions, and other features. Also, Martin O’Malley, the commissioner of Social Security, announced that the process of applying for SSI is being sped up.
This comes after a year of requests from applicants, activists, and people who work. This is a big first step towards making the application process better. Please keep in mind that iClaim will only ask applicants things that are relevant to them. This is to save their time.
Start the process of applying for disability insurance and then give more information about their basic qualifying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The applicant for disability benefits will get a paper copy of the application in the mail after finishing the online application.
They must sign and return this paper copy. For the first rollout, which starts in December, only people between the ages of 18 and 65 who have never been married and are also getting Social Security payments will be able to participate. The SSA wants everyone to be able to use the new app by the end of 2025.
Every year, more than two million people file for Social Security. Supplemental Security Income is offered to people who have conditions that make it impossible for them to work and make a living.
Finally, O’Malley stressed the need for an easier and more accessible application process for people in our communities who need a crucial safety nett. We are dedicated to making this goal a reality in the coming years.
The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program will also change
The Social Security Administration offers more disability benefits besides Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These benefits are only for people who are disabled or who became disabled after contributing to Social Security.
There is one difference between the two disability benefits programmes: SSI is for low-income adults over 65, and applicants do not have to have paid Social Security taxes.
The Social Security Administration says that more than 1.8 million people applied for disability benefits in fiscal year 2023. These benefits included Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Adults who wanted to apply for Social Security used to have to show proof of work for 15 years. This is because not being able to work is the main part of Social Security’s meaning of impairment.
For adults, Social Security says that they are disabled if they have a serious illness that will keep them from working for at least a year or is expected to kill them.
Because SSDI and SSI have very strict definitions of disability, most disability applications are based on illnesses, injuries, limitations, treatment, and work experience. But it can be hard to remember details from a fifteen-year career, like dates, job names, and responsibilities.
For instance, SSA clients at the Urban Justice Centre often have trouble telling the truth about their pasts. SSA helps them regularly to improve their work history tales while their disability claims are being processed.
This is done by updating and clarifying information about their past jobs. A claim for disability benefits from June 22 onwards will not take into account work from 5 years ago instead of 15 years ago, or work that lasted less than 30 days.
