Hillsborough Residents Beware $100 Tax Refund Scams Rising!

People in Hillsborough County got postcards offering a $100 tax refund deal.

Hillsborough County Residents Receive Mysterious $100 Tax Refund Settlement Offers

WFLA reported that people in Hillsborough County have recently been getting postcards offering a $100 settlement in a tax return case. Many people aren’t sure about these postcards, including Pam and Don Davis, who are scared because the first internet form they fill out asks for personal information like their birthdate. They think it might be a trick.

Their department, the Florida State Department of Revenue, says that these postcards were sent by someone chosen by the court, not them. They said they weren’t aware of these postcards before they were sent out. There will be more information about Hillsborough’s surtax halt in a Taxpayer Information Publication that the department will put out in November.

How to Stay Safe from Scams and Identity Theft

The Davises are still suspicious, even after hearing this. They think the postcard looks sketchy and the request for personal information seems odd. If you want to be sure about a deal, check it with the right authorities before giving out any personal information.

This case also brings up a bigger issue: how to avoid falling for scams. There was no advance notice from official bodies, and the form asked for private information. These are both red flags. People should be careful, check deals with reliable sources, and be alert when they get requests for personal information that they didn’t ask for.
