People in Arizona got back a record $88 million in unclaimed property last year, with payments ranging from $1 million to $1.5 million. The Missing Money portal or the websites of state treasurers are good places to look for lost money.
Unclaimed property includes old bank accounts, gift cards that haven’t been used, and paychecks that haven’t been spent. People may forget these things when they move or change jobs. After three to five years, most states consider property to be abandoned. One in seven people have cash that hasn’t been claimed yet, and states hold on to a total of about $70 billion.
