School bus safety top of mind this year for Rockingham County Schools

As Rockingham County Schools get ready for the new school year, leaders talk about important changes to make to the safety of the buses.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Bus safety was talked over by school leaders, police, and the District Attorney (DA) in Rockingham County.

Every Rockingham County Schools bus has cams that record people who break the rules of the road to make sure everyone stays safe. It is against the law this year, according to the DA, to drive past a stopped school bus without stopping.

“Don’t pay attention! This is a message to you.” Officer Sam Page of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office told people, “Don’t drive past a stopped school bus; stop.” “Your help will save a child’s life. They were being careful. It helps us do our job better. “We’ll do everything we can to go after someone who breaks the law.”

How to drive when a school bus is stopped:

It doesn’t matter which way you’re going; you have to stop for a school bus on a two-way road with no center.

When the school bus stops in a center turn lane, you need to stop too.

No matter if the road has four lanes or not, you still have to stop.

“The last thing Rockingham County schools, our law enforcement partners, the district attorney’s office ever want to do is to have a child severely injured or killed as a result of a motorist being negligent, not paying attention, speeding and then passing a stop school bus,” said Sean Gladieux, Rockingham County Schools’ Safety Director.
