Successful Pilot Prompts Permanent Adoption of IRS Direct File, Saving Millions in Fees

According to The Charlotte Observer, in 2025 North Carolinians will have a new way to file their taxes for free thanks to a tool introduced by the IRS. Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Revenue Secretary Ronald Penny announced that the IRS Direct File program will be available to eligible residents.

People who sign up for this service will be able to file their state and federal taxes for free through the IRS. Taxpayers can save money and make sure they get any tax credits they are eligible for without having to pay extra. This project is part of a larger attempt to make it easier and cheaper for everyone to file their taxes.

In 2024, the IRS Direct File scheme was put to the test and did well. It helped people get over $90 million in tax returns and saved them about $5.6 million in fees. Danny Werfel, the commissioner of the IRS, said that the tool worked well and that many people were able to finish their forms in just 30 minutes.

The test program worked so well that it will be available all the time starting next year. More people will be able to use the new method to file their taxes for free and quickly and easily.

IRS Direct File Tool Optional for North Carolinians: Aims to Enhance Security and Efficiency

The IRS Direct File tool will be available, but users don’t have to use it. This tool is meant to cut down on tax scams and make the tax system safer for about 1.25 million people in North Carolina. Secretary Penny said that the program will also help by reducing the number of paper filings.

This will make the Department of Revenue more efficient and reduce the amount of work that state workers have to do. This improved process should make it easier and safer for everyone to file their taxes.
