There are ongoing discussions about how to better help families. Vice President Kamala Harris wants to raise the child tax credit to $6,000 per child, while Republican Senator JD Vance wants to raise it to $5,000.
Kamala Harris Proposes Boosting Child Tax Credit to $6,000 to Support Families
The Vice President, Kamala Harris, wants to raise the child tax credit to $6,000 per child, according to Scripps News. Harris told the public on August 16 that she was going to raise the credit to $3,600 per child and up to $6,000 for families with new babies. Families making up to $200,000 a year get a $2,000 credit, of which $1,600 is refunded.
The House tried earlier this year to slowly raise the part of the credit that could be refunded, but the Senate did not pass the bill. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the expanded child tax credits made a big difference in lowering child poverty. This shows that more help can make a big difference. When credit went back to its normal levels in 2022, it took 5.3 million people out of poverty, but that number went down when credit went back to its normal levels in 2021.
