A man is in critical condition after being shot by a Winston-Salem police officer.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem police officer shot a man late Saturday night.

At 11:10 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 3000 block of Zachary’s Keep Court. The caller stated that a man inside the home was armed with a knife and threatening others.

When the police arrived, he heard screams from several people inside the house, including children. As the door opened, Marcel Ndimubandi was spotted entering, armed with a knife.

Police said that when the officer was attempting to speak with Ndimubandi, he charged him with a knife. That is when the cop shot Ndimubandi, 65.

Ndimubandi was taken to a local hospital and is still in critical condition; police say he is stable.

“At this time, we will not be releasing the identity of the officer involved in this shooting,” the agency stated.

Police said Ndimubandi has been charged with 11 offenses in the last 21 months, including two instances of assault on a female and three counts of assault on a government official.

No one in the house was hurt in the event. The State Bureau of Investigation will also conduct an independent investigation into this shooting, as is customary policy.

The investigation is underway.
