A major Mexican cartel lord was killed in a gunfight with police after carrying out a hit at a local cockfight that killed two people and injured others, according to reports.

According to the Spanish-language news outlet Excelsior, Jose “El Chabelo” Isabel, the Sinaloa Cartel’s senior boss in the Mexican city of Manzanillo, was involved in a fatal confrontation with cops after he and his collaborator carried out the cockfight carnage on Sunday.

Isabel’s group went into the clandestine arena in the Las Parotas area and opened fire on the crowd, killing two people before fleeing, according to accounts.

A Mexican national police squad apprehended the gunmen, resulting in a chaotic shootout that killed Isabel and an unidentified accomplice, according to the site.

Isabel, considered to be a “plaza boss” for the cartel in the city, was already wanted for homicide before to the tragic encounter, according to Latin Times.

Prosecutors in Colima have not provided any information about the victims other than Isabel’s identity.

According to national data, Colima, located on the country’s Pacific coast, reported 623 killings between January and October of this year.

Colima, which is smaller than the state of Delaware, has a murder rate of 105 per 100,000 citizens, which is five times higher than Mexico’s national average, according to the outlet.
