What was once a thriving hub for families, teenagers, and Christmas traditions is now a piece of local history as municipal officials ponder redeveloping the land.
A Trip Down Memory Lane
For many people, Brookwood was more than simply a shopping mall; it was a second home. Shoppers flooded Facebook with nostalgic posts about their pleasant experiences.
“This mall WAS my childhood,” remarked one former consumer. “My third-grade play had a mini-performance there, I played the piano there, and my husband proposed to me while visiting Santa. We brought our baby to see the same Santa. I’m truly heartbroken about this loss.”
Another person recalled Christmas shopping marathons: “The decorations, finding the perfect gifts, stopping to eat in between stores, and those long walks back to the car with your arms full of bags.” “Magical moments I will never forget.”
It’s apparent that Brookwood had an impact on the community, and the closure feels like the end of an era for those who grew up making memories there.

Brookwood Village was established in 1974 and has since become a popular location for shopping, dining, and socializing. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was the ultimate hangout spot. Families wandered through the stores, teenagers met for lunch, and couples had date nights at the restaurants.
Brookwood, like many other malls in the United States, failed to adapt to changing times. The increase of online purchasing, exacerbated by the pandemic, emptied the businesses. By late 2023, the only business left standing was a Five Guys burger establishment, which closed in November 2024.

Brookwood Village is currently peaceful, but its future remains uncertain. Homewood officials are considering a few suggestions for the site.
One authorized concept involves converting a portion of the former Belk department store into a medical center. Other options on the table include residential complexes, but nothing is finalized as yet.
A Bigger Retail Trend
Brookwood’s closure is not an isolated incident. Traditional malls and physical establishments are rapidly disappearing across the United States. Experts expect that 45,000 stores will close over the next five years, citing issues for retailers in areas such as clothes, electronics, and home furnishings.
Big companies like Bed Bath & Beyond, Regal Cinemas, and Big Lots have closed their locations, while others like Foot Locker and Tuesday Morning have gone out of business entirely.
