Knowing when your Social Security payments will arrive in your bank account is crucial for many recipients due to the complicated payment schedule. This is especially important for those receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), who are among the most vulnerable recipients of payments.
SSDI offers monthly payments to those with disabilities that prevent or limit their ability to work. This handicap must impair your capacity to work for a year or more or result in death, and you must have worked at least 5 of the previous 10 years to be eligible for this payment. Depending on your age, this job requirement may not be strictly enforced.
To remain eligible for SSDI, workers must work in a limited capacity because to the income limit. This refers to earnings from “substantial gainful activity” (SGA). In 2024, SGA is $1,550 per month, or $2,590 if you are blind according to Social Security Administration standards. The SGA regulations differ for self-employed individuals, as many disabled individuals prefer not to be restricted by a traditional 9-to-5 job that may interfere with their medical care or demands.
How SSDI is distributed through the month of December
SSDI benefits are based on the same timetable as retirement, family, and survivor benefits. This ensures continuity between payments, so that when a person becomes eligible for retirement, their benefit schedule does not alter or be disrupted.
SSDI benefits fall into two types. This includes both people who began claiming before May 1997 and those who began after that date. For persons who started claiming SSDI before May 1997, their benefit is delivered on the third of every month, unless the date coincides with a weekend or national holiday, in which case it is distributed on the prior date when banks are open and the US Postal Service distributes mail. This ensures that payments are not delayed.
For individuals who began receiving benefits after May 1997, your payment date is determined by your birth date. In general, recipients with birthdays on the 1st-10th of the month will receive their benefits on the second Wednesday of that month, those born on the 11th-20th will receive payouts on the third Wednesday, and those born on the 21st-31st will receive payments on the fourth Wednesday. These benefits continue to be subject to the National Holiday date modification.
If we consider these dates and apply them to the month of December, taking into consideration the peculiarities in the calendar this month due to the Christmas vacations, we get the following distribution dates:
- December 3: SSDI payment for those who began receiving payments before May 1997. It was distributed yesterday,
- December 11:SSDI payment for those born between the 1st and 10th of any month and started after May 1997. Next week will see this round of payments hit beneficiaries accounts.
- December 18:SSDI payment for those with a birthday between the 11th and 20th of any month and are beneficiaries after May 1997.
- December 24: SSDI payment for those born between the 21st and 31st of any month, beneficiaries after May 1997. The payment should go out on the 25th, but that is Christmas Day, and thus a National Holiday. This means that the payment is delivered in advance to ensure that beneficiaries are not negatively affected by any potential delays.
