Donald Trump is being mocked online for telling a “made-up story” about a woman returning one apple to a grocery store refrigerator due to excessive prices, with many criticising his comprehension of common life.
Rising supermarket prices have become a prominent talking point in the president-elect’s campaign for re-election, with supply chain concerns and energy policy cited as contributory factors.
His recent anecdote about the “old woman with three apples,” which was supposed to demonstrate the problems of everyday Americans, was met with scepticism and mocking from social media users, who questioned the story’s practicality and authenticity.
“I tell this story about an old woman who went to the grocery store with three apples, put them on the counter, looked at the price, and said, ‘Would you excuse me?'” And she walked one of the apples back to the refrigerator, then returned to pay for the two apples, leaving with two apples. And the woman behind the counter remarked it was very terrible.” Trump stated.
Critics on social media have pointed out the implausibility of the scenario, noting that apples are not chilled in grocery shops and are sold by weight rather than individually.
“Trump announces that he has never purchased an apple or visited a grocery store,” one person remarked on X.
“It’s fake, made up story to feed his poorly educated base,” a third person stated.
While his fans may ignore such gaffes, critics are likely to use them to call into doubt his credibility.
Meanwhile, rising grocery prices will remain a major concern for Americans.
