A three-year-old girl sat in the backseat of a car as police fatally shot a gun-wielding passenger and injured the driver 'Baby, Baby!'

After a car chase in New York City that ended in a police firefight, one male was killed, one woman was injured, and one baby was unhurt.

During a news conference on Thursday, December 6, New York Police Department (NYPD) authorities acknowledged that officers followed down a car in Brooklyn after ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection device, alerted police to the possibility of a gunshot in the Crown Heights neighborhood.

According to NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, officers arrived at a building on N. Portland Avenue at 3 p.m. local time and were given a description of a car with an out-of-state license plate hanging on one hinge.

Police found the automobile at the intersection of Fulton Street and Washington Avenue, and it fled when the driver, a woman thought to be the baby’s mother, observed a police vehicle.

“They accelerate. They begin cutting through blocks and through Bed-Stuy. They are violating traffic laws. “Our officers are pursuing him,” Maddrey added.

The car became stalled in traffic, and cops blocked it from all sides.

Maddrey also stated that a man in the passenger seat attempted to exit the automobile but was unable to fully unlock his door. He further stated that the guy was holding a gun and pointing it at officers, which prompted the shooting.

According to Maddrey, NYPD officers then began firing at the car, totaling 18 or 19 shots from multiple cops, while instructing everyone in the car to drop any firearms.

The woman driving the car jumped out and tried to flee, and officers claimed that’s when they saw a youngster in the backseat.

“At one point, while officers were engaged, one of the officers started yelling, ‘Baby, baby,’ to tell officers to stop firing,” Maddrey said. An officer then reached inside the vehicle and took the baby from the backseat.

According to local news agencies ABC 7 and FOX 5, the woman was 23, the man was 21, and the girl was 3.

Police said a semi-automatic rifle discovered at the scene had a 30-round capacity, but it is unclear whether the man fired his gun. In New York, the legal capacity is 10 rounds, with the exception of firearms used at competitions or ranges.

The mother suffered two bullet wounds to her right thigh and was transferred to a nearby hospital with the baby. Maddrey claimed that officers handcuffed the man before attempting to perform CPR on him, and that he later died. His family is still being notified, thus he has not yet been officially recognized.

ABC 7 further claimed that the driver is thought to be the mother of the undamaged youngster. Although she had not been charged, police claimed she had broken multiple traffic violations and that the youngster was in the backseat without a car seat.

The woman was apprehended following a brief foot pursuit, and the man in the passenger seat was shot, according to Maddrey, who noted that the man was wanted in a homicide case dating back to March 2024.
