Taking a Christmas tree from North Carolina that was "still standing" after Hurricane Helene drew criticism from the White House

The Bidens were simply trying to have one more Merry Christmas before leaving the White House… That clearly isn’t going well, especially given the backlash on social media. Jill Biden, the First Lady, announced earlier this week that this year’s White House Christmas tree came from a Christmas tree farm in North Carolina. Specifically, the Blue Ridge Mountain region was devastated when Hurricane Helene moved up the east coast of the United States, causing widespread flooding. In a message to the media, Jill Biden attempted to explain that removing the fir from North Carolina was intended to symbolize and honor the state’s strength and all that it has recently gone through: “This beautiful Frasier fir was grown at the Cartner Christmas Tree Farm, where the Cartner family has been growing trees for more than 60 years. Their farm is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, a region that was recently devastated by Hurricane Helene.

The Cartner family lost thousands of trees in the storm. But this one remained standing, and they named it ‘Treemendous’ for the extraordinary hope that it represents… This tree recognizes (the North Carolina National Guard’s) tremendous strength and service.”https://twitter.com/ABC/status/1861146998792913343 As you might imagine, taking one of the only standing trees from the North Carolina tree farm has somewhat backfired on the Bidens. In their defense, a large number of Christmas trees are shipped out of the Tar Heel state each year. North Carolina, along with Oregon, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, is well-known for producing trees that are shipped across the country at this time of year. So the White House may have simply been attempting to honor North Carolina by selecting one of the state’s trees. The internet, on the other hand, saw it differently.
