A North Carolina man has admitted to shooting and killing a 23-year-old male, according to Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson’s press statement.
Mitchell Keith Sykes II, 22, of North Carolina, pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder, with a proposed sentence of 30 to 35 years in jail.
Sykes was charged with murder in the fatal shooting on May 13, 2023. According to Richardson’s announcement, Sykes and the victim, Jordan Drake, had previously known each other and were from the same North Carolina community.
According to Richardson, the two were childhood friends until they had a disagreement just before the shooting. According to the announcement, the pair met to reconcile while visiting Myrtle Beach, when Sykes pulled out a pistol and shot and killed Drake in front of many witnesses. Sykes then allegedly fled the area and was apprehended shortly after.
Sykes was sentenced to 35 years in jail. Murder carries 30 years to life in jail and is a day-to-day felony, thus Sykes must serve every day of his 35-year sentence before being released.
