Attention, all retirees! Social Security has proposed a very important change for you (and for all those who receive money from this service, of course). The Social Security Administration (SSA) has decided to take a step forward and modernize all of its services, so it has made it mandatory that you use the government website to manage any type of transaction.
If the measure surprised you and you still don’t understand it, wait until we explain everything!
Mandatory use of login.gov
That’s right, beneficiaries will have to register on the login.gov platform starting now. This new requirement has been a cold shower for all those who have not fully registered on the government website, as the SSA has confirmed that their accounts will be closed since October.
If you registered on the My Social Security platform before September 18, 2021 and did not register on login-gov, you may not have received your payment this month.
And the government requires you to register on this new platform in order to continue receiving benefits!
Why are they forcing people to use this platform?
The SSA has announced this as a way to improve and manage application access, thereby avoiding potential fraud. Login.gov will be a highly secure platform where users can manage their own accounts, free of cyberattacks.
Beneficiaries will be able to perform the same tasks as before (checking and calculating payments, managing current benefits, and requesting SSA cards), as if they were using the same application.
And what is the problem?
In today’s aging societies, many older adults face technological barriers, and anything involving an Internet page will sound like Mandarin.
And it is already evident on a daily basis that some older people are unable to locate the buttons on the screens, or that when they need to make a simple transaction in other locations, they feel particularly excluded or vulnerable to these requirements.
People in rural or depressed areas, on the other hand, will have even more difficulty carrying out this process because they lack Internet access.
How do I register on login.gov?
The process is not complicated at all, and we will leave it described here for your convenience:
- Access the SSA website by clicking here (it is their original website)
- Select login.gov and it will redirect you directly to the platform we are talking about.
- Create an account, choose a secure password and provide an email address that you use often
- Verify your identity (they will probably ask you for your SSA number and your identification number to complete the process)
- Check your email because they will have sent you an activation code that you will need to enter the platform.
- Accept the terms and conditions of use of the website and you will have fully completed your registration!
The basic requirements for registration are very simple: a valid email address, your social security number, and being at least 18 years old at the time of registration.
You’ve already seen that this modern measure is here to stay, in that it aims to improve user accessibility; however, you’ve also seen that many of them will require additional assistance to complete their transactions, whether from a family member or a friend, or even from community resources, in order to make their requests.
Don’t worry if you’re still lost; the SSA has set up customer service lines where they’ll gladly answer any questions.
Don’t miss out on Social Security benefits by not completing your registration!
