People's Choice' Baby Hippo That Took Social Media By Storm In VA Gets Name After Heated Vote

After a heated global competition, the people have spoken: Richmond Metro Zoo’s baby pygmy hippo now has a suitable name.

Poppy.

The newborn was born on Monday, December 9, and has rapidly charmed local residents and animal enthusiasts alike, gaining popularity on social media after being moved to the zoo family on Christmas Eve.

More over 116,000 votes from 165 countries narrowly surpassed Hammie Mae, claiming 52.8% of the votes and carrying all 50 states.

“Princess Poppy is the people’s choice,” zoo authorities announced. “Poppy received the most votes overall, in the United States, Virginia, and in person.

“The popular vote may have been close, but the victory was decisive.”

Juniper and Omi were also considered, but both were eventually ruled out.

“Poppy is the perfect name for this playful, perky, and ever-increasing popular hippo,” the zoo staff said. “Her name is a flower just like her mother Iris.”

Visitors can see Iris and Poppy in their natural environment at the zoo’s indoor pool area. When the weather warms up and Poppy becomes bigger, they’ll move to the outdoor habitat, which includes a large pool with underwater viewing windows.

The pygmy hippo is an endangered animal found in West Africa. There are less than 2,500 mature individuals remaining in the wild. This birth helps safeguard this uncommon and secretive species.
