ALABAMA – The University of Alabama and Auburn University are in mourning after verifying the deaths of students in the recent terrorist assault in New Orleans.
Kareem Badawi, a student at the University of Alabama, was slain in the early hours of January 1, 2025, according to President Stuart R. Bell. “I grieve alongside Kareem’s family and friends in their heartbreaking loss,” Bell said in a statement, adding that counseling and support resources are available to the university community.
Auburn University President Christopher B. Roberts also verified the death of one of his students in the same attack. Drew Dauphin is a recent Auburn University graduate from 2023. Auburn’s administration offered sympathy and pledged comparable assistance measures for students and faculty. “Words cannot convey the sorrow the Auburn family feels for Drew’s family and friends during this unimaginable time” .
The FBI is investigating the incident as a terrorist assault, and police are still attempting to assess the scale and identify the perpetrators. Both colleges have asked for unity as their communities deal with this tragedy.

Leaders from both institutions have appealed for thoughts and prayers for the victims’ families and everyone affected by the attack. Additional information on the victims has not been provided as investigations continue.
