Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are the two main types of disability benefits that the government gives to people who can not work because of a medical condition or disability.
The main difference between the two supports is the work history. SSDI is for people who have worked and paid into Social Security for years but are disabled and can not do the things they used to do. However, low-income people with little or no work history who can not work because of a medical condition can get SSI.

In 2022, about 6.5 million people got SSI benefits, while 7.9 million disabled workers got monthly payments from the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program.
When it came to 2024, the most disabled workers could get from SSDI was about $3,822, and the average monthly benefit was about $1,505. The average monthly payment from SSI, on the other hand, is only $600, and it will go up to a maximum of $943 by 2024. Of course, these benefits are helpful, but they do not always cover the basic needs of life.
A study by Atticus found that SSI only covers about a third of living costs, no matter where in the US a person lives, while SSDI rarely covers half. Also, SSDI payments each month averaged $1,665 in October 2023.
A person’s benefits depend on how much money they have made over their lifetime and how much they have paid in Social Security taxes. A study from 2022 found that the average SSDI payment in the District of Columbia was $1,321.04, while the average payment in Delaware was $1,599.97.
When figuring out your SSDI benefits, the SSA estimates your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) by looking at the 35 years when you made the most money, taking inflation into account.
The 2024 formula says that 90% of the first $1174 in income is included, 32% of the income between $1174 and $7078 is included, and 15% of the income over that amount is included. By using this formula, SSDI payments will always be proportionally higher for people whose lifetime incomes have been lower.

When will beneficiaries receive their SSDI benefits in January 2025?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently confirmed that SSDI recipients will receive their benefits on the following dates:
- On January 3rd, if they claimed disability benefits before May 1997
- On January 8th, if they were born between the 1st and the 10th
- On January 15th, if they were born between the 11th and the 20th
- On January 22nd, if they were born between the 21st and 31st
