ALBEMARLE, N.C. – Grace Landon of Albemarle intends to buy a house after winning a $1 million reward, according to an NC Education Lottery press release.
Landon, a Powerball player for 20 years, purchased her winning $2 Quick Pick ticket on New Year’s Eve from Friendly Mart on NC 24/27 West Bypass in Albemarle.
She won $1 million after matching all five white balls in the Powerball drawing on New Year’s Day.
“He didn’t believe me at first,” Landon says of Hank, her husband of 30 years.
After double-checking the numbers online, the couple immediately paused “The Young and the Restless” on TV to get into their automobile.
A few hours later, she arrived at the lottery offices in Raleigh to collect her prize.
After the proper federal and state tax withholdings, she returned to Albemarle with $717,501.
Landon, who retired from working at a plant nursery, stated that she plans to add a plant or two to her collection with her windfall.
She also intends to purchase a home and pay off bills, including her grandson’s car.
