A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper has died.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our brother, Master Trooper Anthony S. Godwin (B540), passed away on Dec. 31 while off duty,” the SHP said on Thursday morning.
According to the SHP, Godwin leaves behind his wife and two children.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office expressed sadness on Facebook after learning of Godwin’s tragic death.
According to WECT, Godwin worked in Cumberland and Brunswick counties before being moved to Columbus.
“Trooper Godwin dedicated his life to protecting and serving the people of North Carolina, embodying the highest values of duty, honor, and courage,” wrote the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook. “Rest easy, Trooper Godwin. “We got the watch from here.”
Sheriff Bill Rogers, who was a state trooper before becoming sheriff, extended his sympathy.
“Master Trooper Anthony Godwin exemplified what it means to serve with integrity and compassion,” Mr. Rogers remarked. “His commitment to safety and justice made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, and his loss is deeply felt by all of us in law enforcement.”
