The Social Security Disability Insurance program is called SSDI. A disability benefit that pays American workers every month if they can’t work for more than a year because of a disability or medical condition.
You must have paid enough taxes on your income to get SSDI disability benefits. In order to get Social Security retirement benefits, a person aged 62 must have worked for at least 10 years.
In the United States, a person aged 60 must have worked for 9.5 years before they can get Public Service Disability Insurance payments. It is clear that a worker may not need as many credits if they are younger and have a qualifying condition.
2 key requirements to get SSDI
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has set two requirements that people must meet in order to get monthly payments from the SSDI program. SSA has very strict rules about what makes someone disabled. You must have a medical condition that keeps you from working for more than a year.
Besides having this health problem, you must have worked and given the Social Security Administration enough money in taxes. Of course, you have to live in the country and be a citizen.
But SSA says that some legally present noncitizens of the US who meet all the requirements could be able to get Social Security benefits.
How much money could I get from the SSDI benefits in 2025?
If you apply now and are approved for SSDI payments in 2025, you could get a cheque for about $1,580. This is up from $1,542 after the 2025 COLA increase in January 2025.
In 2024, the largest SSDI payment will be $3,822. In 2025, it will be $4,018. Of course, you probably won’t get this much from your disability insurance, since a disability can keep you from working in your 20s or 20s.
You won’t have much time to work and send SSA your payroll taxes. Do not forget that your first SSDI payment will not come right away. It will be a while before SSA agrees with you.
