The first January payment for SSDI participants is due on January 3, 2024. To get a Social Security check on this day, you must have begun collecting disability payments before to May 1997, or you must be receiving Supplemental Security Income concurrently.
However, the maximum SSDI benefit amount will be available to people who meet all of the Social Security requirements. So, be sure you know them before deciding whether you can accept such a hefty payment.
SSDI payment worth $4,018 – eligibility
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will only make such big payments to workers who meet the conditions in the United States. Disability insurance recipients must:
- have worked for 35 years
- have filed at the required age
- have had jobs covered by SSA
- have earned the contribution and benefit base for 35 years
The problem with these rules is that many disabled workers are unable to decide when to file. Once their condition becomes apparent, individuals may have little choice but to file for SSDI benefits.
If you have been unable to work for more than a year and have a disability that fulfils the SSA’s rigorous definition, you can apply for SSDI. This allows you to receive monthly payments as you heal. Otherwise, they will convert into retirement benefits automatically.
How much are average SSDI payments?
If you anticipate you will not be eligible for an SSDI payment of $4,018, you may get an average payment.
As of October 2024, it was $1,542. Following the 2025 COLA hike, Social Security Disability Insurance payments will be approximately $38 greater.
Thus, the new SSDI average payout will be roughly $1,580. Of course, if you earned a very low wage or worked for only a few years, your compensation must be lower than average. If this is the case, you may also be eligible for SSI.
SSI can pay qualified claimants an average cheque of $697 in 2024, or $714 after the COLA in 2025. Individuals who qualify for the maximum SSI payment can get up to $967 beginning December 31, 2024.
