The Social Security Administration’s payment schedules are pretty consistent and follow a pattern, but there are some big changes in December that you should know about.
The first thing that stands out is that there is no SSI payment planned for December 1, 2024. In fact, people who were supposed to get it must have picked it up on November 29 because December 1 is a Sunday.
People who are retired or get SSDI usually get a payment from Social Security on the third. After that, there are usually three payments on Wednesday. There will be a payment on December 3, 2024, but only two checks will be sent out on Wednesdays.
No Social Security Payment on the Fourth Wednesday in December
It has been confirmed by the Administration that the payment that was due on December 25 will be sent on December 24 instead. This is because December 25 is a Federal Holiday and Christmas Day.
But there will be a payment on December 2nd and again on December 3rd. So, people who are retired or get SSDI will get their monthly payments on December 11, 18, and 24.
To get Social Security on December 3, you must have been getting retirement or SSDI benefits since before May 1997. You can also get Social Security if you get SSI payments.
The payments on November 11, 2018, and 24 will go to people whose birthdays are between January 1 and 10, November 11 and 20, or December 21 and 31.
Will Social Security payment amounts be affected by these changes?
Not at all. In December, retirees and people who get SSDI will still get the same amount of Social Security. In fact, they won’t change until January 2025.
For the first time since January 3, this is when the average 50-dollar increase in Social Security payments will start to show up. The COLA increase on December 31, 2024, will only help people who get Supplemental Security Income.
Social Security’s COLA Fact Sheet says that the average payment for retirement in December will be about $1,927. People who get SSDI may get around $1,542. People who get SSI will usually get about $697.
