Raleigh, North Carolina (WNCN) — A social media serial murderer warning, which investigators claim is a hoax, has moved to another North Carolina county.
Last week, Edgecombe County authorities discovered a fake social media post with a man’s mugshot and a warning to residents about a “serial killer.”
“You better believe if I think we have a serial killer in our county, we’ll be out front,” stated Edgecombe County Sheriff Cleveland Atkinson.
The false serial murderer message has now appeared in Warren County, officials said Friday.
The warning, which depicts a bald man with a beard, states that he “goes around knocking on people’s doors claiming to be homeless, seeking help, and attacks you.”
Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers warns against frauds this Christmas season.
“It is being shared around our community,” the Warren County Sheriff’s Office said, adding that “there seems to be no news, or evidence” to back up the assertions in the social media post.
According to Warren County authorities, the present position also appears to allude to Warrenton, Virginia.
“The safety and security of our communities are very important to us, and we can assure you that if this person was in our midst, we would alert the public,” according to deputies from Warren County.
CBS 17 located the man in the photo. He is from Louisiana, and the mugshot is from a case in 2018, when he was detained on multiple charges, none of which were homicide or murder.
His name is also different from the one used in the fraudulent social media post.
