Republicans are waging a war on democracy and fairness. Their NC move demonstrates it. Opinion

The North Carolina legislature’s withdrawal of traditional responsibilities from incoming Gov. Josh Stein and Attorney General Jeff Jackson exemplifies Republicans’ fight on democracy and fairness at the state, municipal, and national levels.

From Jefferson Griffin demanding that 60,000 votes (Democratic and Republican) for state Supreme Court Justice be challenged for no reason, to Donald Trump blatantly stating that he will disregard the Constitution’s guarantee of birthright citizenship, the Republican Party has demonstrated a commitment to violating American citizens’ rights, privileges, and dignity.

Is this what the people voted for?

Thanks IRA

Finally, wonderful news. The Inflation Reduction Act will curb my prescription costs at $2,000 per year beginning next year.

I have rare blood cancer and type 2 diabetes. The basic drugs that I require to live are quite expensive. For years, my out-of-pocket expenses have risen to more than $18,000 a month, forcing me to postpone a well-deserved retirement. Due to exorbitant prescription prices, I’ve had to restrict my meds on occasion. At the age of 72, I have to work numerous jobs to afford them.

The $2,000 out-of-pocket cap may allow me to retire or work part-time. It will allow me to spend more time with my family and restore some of my independence. It has a profound impact on your life.

Shameful GOP

Shamefully, the Republican-led NC General Assembly transferred the duties and obligations of freshly elected Democrats to the posts they could hold. As a result, the Republicans disregarded voters and effectively discarded their choices. This behavior contradicts everything of the ideals and morality that we learnt from our parents and public schools. Did your parents not educate you how to play fairly and respect others?

No Biden fan

I commend you for the wonderful editorial. “Joe Biden’s pardon of his son betrays those who stand for the rule of law .” Beginning with his administration’s inept withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 and ending with his cynical, unprincipled pardon of his son Hunter — despite repeatedly assuring our country that he would never do so — President Biden has now cemented his place alongside Andrew Johnson as one of our country’s least admired presidents. He is, as Hillary Clinton put it, “simply deplorable.”

Democracy dies

“Disaster Relief” SB 382 will be devastating for WNC and the death of democracy in North Carolina.

This fake bill, prepared in secret by a few sore-loser fanatics and rammed through without process, is an anti-democratic coup attempt, delaying relief! The majority of the law seeks to impose significant changes on the ballot counting process, the organization of the State Board of Elections, and other broad reforms in the administrative and judicial departments.

As a nonpartisan local activist, I am surprised that one party entirely abandoned the democratic process in order to obtain unearned power against the will of our citizens. Democracy dies quietly.

No New Nukes

Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese nuclear abolitionist group composed of survivors of the 1945 atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. After several years as a candidate, one may wonder why now?

Perhaps the reason, given the status of the world today, is represented in the words of Jorgen Frydnes, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. “Nuclear weapons and humanity cannot coexist.”

We should also acknowledge the prudence of the Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group in the United States Congress, which has proposed a resolution to rethink the deployment of the Sentinel, the latest intercontinental ballistic missile system. This system is already significantly over budget, and scores of retired high-ranking military officers believe it will only increase the danger.
