Officials say a convicted killer escaped from CDCR custody at the Delano courthouse

State and Kern County law enforcement are looking for a convicted killer who escaped from a Delano courthouse on Monday morning, according to officials.

Cesar Moises Hernandez, 34, allegedly fled a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation van, jumped a fence, and escaped from the Delano courthouse on Jefferson Street around 10:40 a.m., according to 17 News.

CDCR officials did not explain how Hernandez managed to get away from staff. According to a release from prison officials, Hernandez “evaded staff custody” shortly after arriving at the courthouse for a hearing.

CDCR keeps track of the inmates as they travel throughout California.

Hernandez is serving a 25-year-to-life sentence for first-degree murder in Los Angeles County. He was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to North Kern State Prison.

Hernandez was scheduled to appear in court Monday after pleading no contest to manufacturing a weapon and possessing alcohol or drugs while incarcerated — a potential third “strike” that could land him in prison for life.

Hernandez is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He was wearing an orange inmate jumpsuit.

Officials urged the surrounding community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or sightings immediately. Hernandez is considered dangerous.

If you see Hernandez, do not approach him and contact 911 or Lt. Anthony Sotello at 661-721-3600.
