The Myrtle Beach area has numerous nicknames that residents and frequent tourists may be familiar with. Myrtle Beach is commonly referred to as the Grand Strand or Dirty Myrtle, but one ESPN sideline reporter put her own spin on the name.
Alyssa Lang covered Coastal Carolina’s 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl game against the University of Texas in San Antonio from the sidelines. During the game, Lang referred to Myrtle Beach as ‘Dirty Myrty’ and later retweeted the statement on X, now known as Twitter.
While Dirty Myrty is a newer nickname for Myrtle Beach, Dirty Myrtle has been used regularly over the years. According to the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the true origin of the term is disputed, with many origin myths circulating. Indeed, many inhabitants of Myrtle Beach use the term, and some companies include it into their names.
The Dirty Myrtle Wing Company will establish its first site along the coastline in Myrtle Beach in August 2023, followed by another in Murrells Inlet.
