More than 21,000 people were cited by police in California over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The California Highway Patrol said that over 20,000 people were penalised for drunk driving, speeding, and other infractions during Thanksgiving weekend.

During the holiday, the CHP carried out a “maximum enforcement period.” The effort seeks to guarantee the safety of all Californians by targeting those who break the law. On Monday, the department revealed the statewide results of maximum enforcement, which included more than 21,000 citations or arrests.

Maximum enforcement results

• DUI Arrests: 1,113
• Speeding Citations: 17,516
• Seatbelt Violations: 852
• Distracted Driving Citations: 1,871
• Other Citations: 9,324

“Even outside of a Maximum Enforcement Period, let’s continue to make responsible choices: drive sober, avoid distractions, follow speed limits, and always buckle up,” CHP said.
