Colin Brown, a beloved CBC High School and Affton Americans hockey player, was shot and killed, and the St. Louis hockey community is still reeling. Meanwhile, a newly arrested suspect remains in police custody.
Garrett Jordan, 26, was detained in relation to Colin’s death, according to court filings filed Friday. He faces a number of counts, including first-degree murder.
One hockey mom. Saturday told Annie Krall of 5 On Your Side that losing such a bright athlete at the age of 16 was a tragedy.
Colin was hit by stray gunshot on Interstate 55 at Loughborough Avenue on November 23rd, while returning from a hockey game.
According to court filings, evidence reveals that rounds were fired by many shooters, but the cause is unknown.
“You have theories of acting with another and also theories of transferred intent,” St. Louis Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore said at a press conference on Friday.
Documents detail how police tracked Jordan’s phone location data to the scene of the shooting, though Gore stated on December 13 that more arrests may be made.
“If you look at the probable cause statement, no where in the probable cause statement does it say [Jordan’s] the shooter,” Mr. Gore explained.
Colin’s life was cut short four days later by a stray bullet to the neck when he sat next to his father, retired Illinois State Police Lieutenant Colonel Calvin Brown.
Tiffany Renfro, the mother of an Imperial hockey player, remembers hearing the news.
“I just, my heart dropped,” Renfro said to Krall at Centene Community Ice Center on Saturday.
Renfro attends kids games every weekend, including a double header on December 14, because her eight-year-old son Bobby Renfro wants to play hockey in high school, like Colin, or even farther.
“You see all these little kids running around, all of them have futures,” Renfro told reporters. “It might not even be hockey-related. It might be for something else. I didn’t know anything about him other that he played hockey. But he wanted to go on to other things. He had plans and aspirations. You never know what will happen when you watch all these young hockey players.”
Don Arias, the director of Affton Americans U16 Hockey, explained what lies ahead, especially because Colin was a member of their team in addition to playing for CBC.
“It’s a long way to go in regards to the criminal justice side because it’s got to go to court,” Arias told the press. “We’re not sure what will happen there. I’m hoping he’ll be convicted for his crimes and actions against Colin.”
“It was the wrong place, wrong time,” Renfro added. “It’s heartbreaking.”
Police said they are not ruling out the prospect of Jordan facing additional charges in the future.
On Friday, a judge from the 22nd Judicial Circuit in St. Louis issued an arrest warrant for another individual who faced felony narcotics charges on November 20.
The judge stated that the warrant and revoked bond for this second man’s case stemmed from Jordan’s murder charges in connection with Colin’s death.
