Mom charged with murder in the drowning death of a three-month-old

A mother in Chevy Chase, Maryland, was charged with the murder of her three-month-old child on Sunday.

Around 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a complaint of a baby drowning at a home on the 7300 block of Summit Avenue in Chevy Chase.

When they arrived, they discovered a three-month-old victim and sent the infant to the hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Mackenzie R. Colgan, 37, was brought into arrest on the spot. According to court documents, she has been charged with first-degree murder.

According to court filings, Colgan told her family that she was going to bathe the baby. After 20 minutes, she informed the father, John Volpe, that the infant had died. Volpe discovered the baby motionless in the bathtub and began CPR, while Colgan dialed 911.

According to investigators, Colgan stated that she awoke on Sunday morning with the intention of “ending everything” by murdering herself and her family.

Colgan reportedly told authorities that after drowning the 3-month-old, she planned to jump out of the second-story window, but instead went downstairs to inform Volpe what had occurred.
