A hip-hop artist was allegedly shot dead in a Swedish parking garage

Swedish police announced Friday that a man was shot dead in a parking garage in Norrkoping, with media identifying the victim as musician Gaboro, who allegedly had ties to criminal groups.

A video purporting to depict the killing soon circulated on social media. In the footage, which appears to have been taken with the shooter’s camera, a person with a handgun is seen firing multiple shots in a car garage.

Police said that they were aware of the footage and that it was part of their investigation.

They claimed a male in his twenties was found injured at the location on Thursday morning and was subsequently confirmed dead in the hospital.

Police said in a statement that they were looking for information on a silver station wagon that could be related to the case.

“The police are still working very intensively on the case, which is classified as murder,” according to a statement.

Multiple media reports said that the man was rapper Gaboro, whose tracks had been heard millions of times on Swedish music streaming service Spotify.

Gang shootings and bombings in Sweden have increased as competing groups settle scores, and police are trying to regulate the illicit drug market.

Several well-known artists have previously been targets of the violence.

In June, 26-year-old rapper C.Gambino — real name Karar Ramadan, not to be confused with American musician Childish Gambino — was slain in a shooting. He had been voted the country’s hip-hop artist of the year the previous month.

Einar, an award-winning Swedish rapper, was shot and died in Stockholm during a gang battle in October 2021.

Nonetheless, authorities told Reuters last week that they were making progress in their efforts to reduce lethal gang violence, with fewer shootings and shooting deaths.

“This is the first time we have seen the trend pointing clearly downwards over an extended period of time,” Police National Operations Department head Johan Olsson told Reuters.

Last year, 53 people were killed in 363 shootings, many of which occurred in public and claimed the lives of innocent victims and bystanders.
