A seemingly little trip at a crossroads petrol station in rural North Carolina made a man wealthy after he purchased a lotto ticket while at the store.

According to the N.C. Education Lottery, Jeffrey Kettle spent $20 at the Chicod Store south of Greenville on Thursday, December 19, to purchase a Big Cash Payout ticket.

The odds of winning the grand prize are 1 in 1,598,205, yet Kettle pulled it off. The jackpot totaled $2 million.

He claimed the money on December 23 and had to choose between a lump sum and $100,000 yearly payments over the following 20 years, according to lottery authorities.

“He chose the lump sum of $1.2 million and, after required state and federal tax with holdings, took home $858,006,” according to authorities.

Kettle did not reveal how he planned to use the money.

Big Cash Payout is a scratch-off game in which players have 22 chances to match the winning numbers on their ticket. If a “bundle of cash” sign appears, the player receives the prize instantaneously. If the “moneybag” symbol appears, the prize is doubled.

Greenville is about an 85-mile drive southeast of Raleigh.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without causing harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that may destroy lives and families.
