This October, bank office closings are still in the news. Even though the end of the month is coming up, they haven’t slowed down. In just one week, 35 sites have been closed.
In this round of branch closings, not all banks were involved. US Bank had the most, closing 11 locations between October 15 and 22. Wells Fargo and Bank of America each closed six stores, and PNC closed five. Most of the rest were spread out among Chase, Fidelity Bank, Beverly Bank, First National Bank of Omaha, and Flagstar.
California was the worst affected by this move to cut back. Nine branches were closed just this week, on top of the 86 branches that closed across the state between January and the end of September.
A US Bank representative talked to DailyMail.com about the closings and gave their thoughts. “Customers’ banking habits and preferences are changing. For example, they are quickly moving to digital and mobile banking platforms and want things to be easier.”
Our physical footprint is being looked at again, and in some cases, branch locations are being merged in some areas as we change with our clients. We are closing some branches, but we are still opening and improving others, and we are also quickly improving our internet services.
US Bank has closed 121 locations just this year, so it seems like closing branches like this is now the norm. However, some customers don’t agree with the policy. A lot of older people have trouble with the online apps that banks now use to run their businesses. Also, some transactions can only be done in person with the help of a bank staff, even if the customer would rather do them online.
Also, this doesn’t look at any habits people might have. A poll by Self Financial found that 39% of people were more likely to trust banks with real branches than banks without them. Also, almost two-thirds of Americans still go to a real store to deposit cash and more than half go to talk to an adviser in person.
