North Carolina – In a distressing incident that has horrified a small North Carolina community, a 35-year-old man named R. Butcher has been arrested and charged with the gruesome murder of his aunt and uncle. According to reports, Butcher murdered the elderly couple with close-range shotgun rounds to the heads before fleeing with their vehicle.
On the night of November 7, 2024, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence following reports of a shooting. When first responders arrived at the site at 10:26 p.m., they discovered a horrifying scene: a 72-year-old man, Michael P., and his 70-year-old wife, Carolyn P., were both dead on their driveway, having received fatal shotgun wounds to their heads at point-blank range.
Butcher, Michael and Carolyn’s nephew and close neighbor, was soon identified as a suspect during the investigation. Within hours following the murder, police found Powell’s stolen truck in a hotel parking lot. On November 8, early in the morning, Butcher was caught without incident by sheriff’s and police personnel.
Butcher faces two counts of first-degree murder in the murders of his family, as well as one count of felony larceny for stealing the victim’s truck. Butcher was initially held for vehicle theft but was later charged with murder as evidence mounted against him. He is currently being held without bond on the murder accusations, with a $35,000 secured bond issued for the larceny charge.
While the motive for the double homicide is unknown, the sheriff’s office confirmed Butcher’s familial relationship with the victims, implying a catastrophic betrayal inside the family.
Sheriff J. Smith offered his condolences for the occurrence, recognizing the Powells as prominent and respected members of the community. “This family was a staple in the community and wonderful individuals. “It makes no sense that they had to die in this manner,” Sheriff Smith said.
Senior Pastor T. Judkins, of which the couple was an active part, expressed tremendous sadness about the circumstances. He emphasized Butcher’s documented mental health issues and bemoaned the absence of early assistance, which he feels could have prevented the tragedy.
“This young man has been plagued with mental health issues for years,” Judkins added. “I had hoped long ago that something could have been done. If that were the case, we would not be having this conversation right now.
Many people praised the couple’s contributions to their community, with Michael well-known for his membership in the church choir and both he and his wife being regular attendees. The incident has had a profound impact on the neighborhood, leaving neighbors and friends weeping and seeking answers.
Butcher is set to appear in court on November 19 to face the repercussions of his crimes. Meanwhile, the community continues to grieve the Powells’ deaths and struggle with the horrific circumstances surrounding them.
