Daisy Link has been imprisoned on a second-degree murder accusation since 2022, but she unexpectedly fell pregnant by another inmate.
Link, 29, and Joan Depaz, 24, were both in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on separate murder accusations. They claim they have never met in person yet have had a baby together.
Link referred to their child as a “miracle baby,” and Depaz compared her conception to that of the Virgin Mary, according to WSVN.
According to the source, the two detainees began communicating and developing a friendship.
“Being in isolation for so long you begin to spend hours and hours talking to this person, you know, to the point where it’s almost as if you’re in the same room with them,” according to Link.
Depaz recalls telling her, “I’ve always wanted to have a baby.” And I won’t get to do that for a long time. So if I had to choose someone, it would be you.”
They then devised a plan to conceive a child. “This is gonna go down in history,” Depaz believed at the time.
When asked how she became pregnant while awaiting trial in prison, Link said, “through the vent.”
“You’d bang on it and hear folks on other floors. “You would have to stand on the toilet to talk to them,” the 29-year-old told the site over the phone.
According to Depaz, the couple quickly realized that Link could drop something from her vent and have it land in his vent. He wrapped his sperm in Saran wrap “every day like five times a day” for one month straight.
“He would kind of roll it up almost like a cigarette and he would attach it to the line that we had in the vent and I would pull it through,” says Link. She then inserted it into “yeast infection applicators” and “administered it.”
She got pregnant after a few attempts, she said. Dr. Fernando Akerman, medical director of the Fertility Center of Miami, told WSVN that while the chances of conceiving in this manner are minimal, it is feasible.
The baby was born on June 19. According to the site, the five-month-old is currently residing with Depaz’s mother.
“I cannot believe that worked. “I believe everything happened for a reason,” Link explained. “She can be anything. I believe she has the potential to be amazing.”
She continued, “It’s a tremendous twist, it is. Everyone tells me, ‘This is like some Lifetime Movie Network.'”
The couple is now being held in different institutions. Depaz, who is charged with first-degree murder, is being housed at Metrowest Detention Center, while Link, charged with second-degree murder, remains at Turner Guilford Knight, according to records. According to WSVN, they continue to communicate by phone and video call with their child.
