Chesterfield, South Carolina — A Chesterfield County woman answered the phone and heard what sounded like a child’s voice on the other end. “Mama, help,” the voice said.
However, the voice was only a recording, and the call was a fraud, according to the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.
When she answered the phone, she reported hearing a click followed by what appeared to be a tape of a young boy speaking, according to the sheriff’s office.
The resident hung up the phone and alerted authorities, understanding that it was not her child and most likely a fraud.
“If you receive a call like this, first confirm that your child is safe. “If your child is with you or you know they are safe, hang up right away and call the sheriff’s office,” the sheriff’s warning added.
These are just a few of the many phone scams aimed at residents. Other scams include bogus USPS texts and phone calls announcing false jury duty and court date notifications.
