A man accused of shooting at occupied cars on a busy North Carolina highway, hurting one person, has been charged with assault and other offenses, authorities said Friday.
The 23-year-old suspect was charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and 11 counts of shooting a weapon into an occupied vehicle or dwelling, according to a Raleigh police news release.
A second individual apprehended during the man’s detention has been freed without charge. Police stated Thursday that the second individual was present at the house when the suspect was apprehended.
The flurry of gunfire at cars on a busy roadway and surrounding homes sparked worry in North Carolina’s capital. There is no information on the motive.
According to authorities, the case gained attention after numerous persons reported shooting on a stretch of Interstate 40 in Raleigh and neighboring Cary during the Wednesday morning rush hour. Reports of more similar shootings soon surfaced.
According to authorities, eight automobiles were struck—two on Monday, four on Wednesday, and two on Thursday. According to a police news release, four other shootings occurred at homes on Wednesday. Raleigh’s police chief said Thursday that the shootings were connected.
