GIBSON — This past weekend, Vernon Jones (R), who used to be a state representative for Georgia, came back to Scotland County to celebrate his 45th high school reunion.
Jones, who lives in Green Pond and Gibson, spoke at the offices of the Scotland County Republican Party for a while. This is when he went to the Gibson Depot Museum and met some local supporters. He then walked the museum.
Jones talked more about his memories of going to Pate Gardner, Gibson Middle, Carver Middle, and Scotland High School (Class of 1979) in an interview with Dennis Wright. Aside from that, he talked about North Carolina Central University and why he decided to go there.
Jones got upset when he talked about this subject because it made him remember how he got to be where he is now.
In a long chat, he talked about why he changed his party registration from Democrat to Republican.
Jones walked around the museum and looked at all the old things. He noticed and praised Vickie Leech, the head of the museum, for all the hard work she has put into getting it in shape.
He also talked about how to keep the museum running by getting grants.
The Gibson Depot Museum is open from noon to four o’clock every Saturday. The museum is open to the public for free, but there is a gift box at the front door.
In one of the rooms, there is a TV set up that plays talks that Dennis Wright has done. On TV, you’ll be able to watch the Vernon Jones interview as well as interviews with 13 other people from last year, such as Sadie Odom, Pinky Odom, Jake Coughenoir, Tom Whitlock, and Jim McLaurin.
